I frequently use the oil skimmer to separate the heavy oil and water mix that is often found if the bottom of drums of use oil. Here you can see that the 5 gallons of water and oil mix yielded about 2.5 gallons of oil that can then be centrifuged. It's easier to strip the oil off the top rather than run the whole mess. This is the photo after separation. Bucket on the left is oil and the bucket on the right is water. The skimmer can remove the oil more efficiently than trying to drain it off.
