After cutting the bottom and top off the old processor I chucked the bottom in the lathe and cleaned up the weld seam. This will make it easier to chuck. As an added benefit the heaters can slide on and off easily.
I then cleaned up the end and chamfered for welding.
Prepared the top flange for welding.

Tossed the parts on the positioner and welded them together.

Drilling out the old 1/2" NPT with a 2" drill for the new 1-1/4 NPT fitting to be brazed on.
Brazed the nuts onto the back side of the upper flange using silicon bronze because the flange is cast iron and the nuts are steel. This will allow the bolts to be installed and removed without disrupting the insulation.

Stepped and faced for the fitting.
Brazed the cast iron fitting on using silicon bronze. A black pipe fitting would have been preferred but I used what I could get locally.
Test fit the 1-1/4 pipe that will serve as my packed column. It is 36" tall.

Decided to pack my distillation column with stainless steal stubbing pads.
I rolled the scrubbing pad between my hands like dough until it was long and skinny.
It only took three pads to fill the column. The scrubber pads provide condensing media to improve the separation.
